2. History, Legends & Cultural Significance

Bãi Tranh, located on Hòn Miễu Island, is part of Nha Trang Bay, recognized since 2003 as one of the world’s most beautiful bays. Historically, the island has been a hub for local fishermen, with aquaculture and fishing shaping its culture. A local legend tells of a sea goddess protecting the island’s fishermen, a story celebrated during Nha Trang’s annual Sea Festival. The beach’s pristine state reflects ongoing conservation efforts, though some visitors note occasional litter due to heavy boat traffic. In 2025, Nha Trang’s global spotlight, boosted by events like Miss Cosmos, enhances Bãi Tranh’s appeal as a cultural and natural gem.

Timeline:

  • 7th Century: Cham people used Nha Trang Bay for trade and fishing.

  • 19th Century: Hòn Miễu became a key fishing hub for locals.

Personal Review

The pier divides Tranh Beach into two areas: the sandy beach (mainly for swimming) and the pebbly beach (mainly for taking photos). The water is clear and warm; however, the swimming area is quite small and crowded (I went on a weekday and it was already packed), with quite a lot of trash and a smell of fuel due to the constant activity of speedboats. You need to buy a ticket to enter. The services on the island are fairly good: restrooms and changing rooms are free, fresh water showers cost 10,000 VND per bucket, and lockers are 50,000 VND each. There are also food and drink stalls. Overall, it’s worth experiencing, but booking a tour in advance would be a better option.
